Case Study 2
retinopathy
Mr X is a married father of two in his 30s who suffered sudden and severe sight loss due to diabetes (image on the right shows how his vision may be). His marriage, family, work and social life all suffered due to difficulties he was now encountering as a result of his sight loss. He was unable to work and became very depressed.

It became clear to BCBS’ Visiting Officer that what he really needed was help establishing and maintaining contact with his friends and information about the resources and financial support available to help him learn to live as independently as possible. He also needed help in boosting his self-confidence and self-esteem, both of which had been shattered when he lost his sight.

Meeting with Mr X, BCBS was able to help him take a fresh look at his life and show him the help available to enable him to move forwards. A regular programme of home visits was agreed that provided Mr X and his family with the opportunity to discuss issues and find solutions to challenges they were facing.

Through BCBS, Mr X was introduced to a number of social groupsbraille keyboard and encouraged to take part in sporting activities that gave him a great sense of achievement. BCBS was also able to loan Mr X a range of IT equipment to introduce him to the wide range of support resources available for visually impaired users.

Today Mr X and his family are still learning to live with his visual impairment but they are much more positive and confident about the future.

BCBS is still there to help him as his needs continue to change over time.
