Greenham Common Walk

10am  - Sunday 27th September 2009

River Thames

This September, BCBS will be holding its first sponsored walk on Greenham Common in West Berkshire. The walk will follow the taxiway of the old US airbase, a name linked world-wide with the awesome potential of nuclear deterrence and the protest movement it gave rise to.

The old runway, once the longest military runway in Europe, is now being  overtaken by purple heather and yellow flowering gorse and  cattleand ponies grazing nearby. You can still see the control tower and old silos and imagine how it once was.

bunkerAs well as completing as many 6km circuits as you want to, you can try your hand at simple everyday tasks while wearing a blindfold or Simispecs, glasses that simulate various forms of visual impairment, giving you a sense of what it could be like to experience sight loss.

The circuit measures around 6km but may seem more if it is windy!  All walkers should be aware that the Common is exposed to the elements and that everyone should come prepared for wind, rain and shine!  Dogs are welcome on the Common if kept on a leash.

Registration in advance  £5 per adult, over 60's £2, children under 16 free (but must be accompanied by a responsible adult).

For more information call 0118 987 2803, email office@bcbs.org.uk or download an entry form.
