Our
Children’s Department
currently supports over 100 children from all over Berkshire (including
Reading) aged from birth to 18 years, all
of whom suffer from a severe diagnosed eye
condition. 75%
of our younger members also have additional special needs.
Our Families’ Support Co-ordinator provides information and
advice on products and services relating to visual impairment, benefits
and allowances, as well
as organising a comprehensive timetable of sporting, educational and
fun activities, all tailor-made to include tactile and sensory
experiences for the children and their families which are held
regularly throughout the year.
Get Active Sports Club
In September
2009 BCBS launched the Get Active Sports Club, part of a British Blind
Sport project funded by the Big Lottery Fund, to give visually impaired
members aged 10-25 the same sporting opportunity as their sighted peers.
Supported by Alan Whetherly, runs
monthly sessions that have seen visually impaired children and young
people enjoying cricket, tennis, jujitsu, basketball, goalball and
football. Needless to say, some of the sports are adapted and use
special equipment but, with the support of trained coaches (some of
whom are also visually impaired), the children and young people can
have fun, enjoy being part of a team and experience a new sport.

Unless
otherwise stated all session take place at the Bracknell Sports and
Leisure Centre between 11am and 1pm and are subject to change. Booking fee £3.50.
Please call 0118 987 2803 to reserve your place.
